Something New for Waxman to Investigate

We tip the SWNIDish hat to gentle reader KevinK for pointing us to the AP's coverage of the drop in American military and Iraqi civilian deaths in September.

How big a drop, you ask? How about 50%?

Obviously something is wrong here. Since it is well known that the surge isn't working, that a massive civil war is going on relentlessly, and that all hope in Iraq is lost for the next century, the drop in deaths demands explanation. Are casualties dropping because everyone is already dead? Because every available bullet and explosive has been used already? Because the Evil Bush Administration has enlisted Halliburton secretly to take over the Associated Press?

We call for a Congressional Investigation, led by the intrepid Henry Waxman (D-Unctuousness), whose major qualification for leading such an investigation is ... well ... that he's led a lot of investigations.

Wow, didn't know the press would actually comment on this, I saw traffic on the SIPR on this for the last few days, but how big of a story is this in the states? As to the blackwater thing (which I'm not sure if you've talked about). Yes they are agressive, but no more so than we are. They've been in Iraq since the begining and this is just now getting headlines? I'm trying to figure out what the Iraqi government is trying to do with this. Other than to hurt the U.S. military.

On Blackwater, we wouldn't underestimate the degree to which the Iraqi government picked a target through which it could appear to be independent of the US and sovereign over its affairs. This is like the saber-rattling that has come from Russia in the last few years: the government does something to say that it's asserting national power for national interest, as a means of establishing identity and pride domestically.
