I actually liked "In the Good Ol' Summertime" slightly better. But neither were terribly great. The main characters in both were forced in the acting and the character development in "Summertime" wasn't written as well.
It's Lubitsch's brilliance with comedy and actors that makes Shop superior for us, whatever the merits of Laslo's two scripts. Frank Morgan and Felix Bresshart are anything but forced, in our estimate.
For more Lubitsch wonderfulness we recommend Ninotchka with Greta Garbo, a terrific satire of communism, and To Be or Not to Be with Carole Lombard and Jack Benny, a terrific satire of Nazism.
It's a shame you don't like it, Christian. I would disagree completely about your take on the acting. I found the acting absolutely brilliant--wonderfully intimate moments between the characters in "Shop." I actually did not like "In the Good Ol' Summertime" at all. But to each his own; it's what makes the world go round. (Oh and SWNID and I disagree on a lot of movies, so....)
