Miserable News for Cincinnati Education: Willard Indicted

Cincinnati's W. E. B. DuBois Academy was almost certainly the city's most successful charter school and arguably the most successful school of any kind in educating at-risk students of poverty.

So it is very discouraging to learn that its founder, former superintendent and current paid advisor Wilson Willard was indicted for multiple counts of fraud.

Mr. Willard is innocent until proved guilty, and we hope that he's genuinely and totally innocent. But we find ourselves disheartened that what seemed a genuine success story in a critical area of social life and improvement in our city has degenerated months into yet another personal and financial scandal.

Yuck!

I hope to goodness that the school will remain open I enrolled my son there because I like the disipline required of the students. My son was not an unruly child while in Cincinnati but CPS did nothing to disipline those who were. He feels safer at Dubois Academy, and, he has done very well. I ask all involved to please, do not close our school! If the academy does close I will enroll my son in a home tutoring program because CPS is not for him.

The truth is that MR. Wilson and most of his staff is guilty of harming our chldren. Why should we turn our heads at the damange that,s been done here? when the school first opened, it had a problem with a teacher being arrested for bad conduct on the WEB with minor girls. Makes since that the hiring Superintendent followed behind that teacher; I had a child who attened WEB DUBOUIS also, and I quickly new that it's education for my child was not at best taken, Why make it worst by saying that,OUR kids that, are in need, need schools like this? just becuse the other system has failed also. No it's not right and will not just do for everyone. Also our prayer has been heard.

People make mistakes, and there are some who have been very quick to judge Wilson Willard. For those who knew Mr. Willard as a principal, teacher, and youth advocate, I have to let you know that Wilson Willard LOVES children-- probably more than the people who have written information on this website. Willard has informally adopted children who have no support at home. He has given freely of his time and money. He has also worked very hard to establish WEB DUBOIS ACADEMY from a dusty, dirty building. . . to a great Cincinnati Charter School. His dream and his sweat built the school, and allegations of fraud can not stain the positive impression that he has made on thousands of lives.

You never really know a man until you walk in his shoes. Try being accused of such a thing and slanderred all over the media. The media and prosecutor have already convicted the man before the trial began. Like it or not, considering the impact that he has made on the lives of many children and adults, he doesn't deserve the lynching the media is conducting.
