Bronson Covers CCU's "Beyond the Call" Chapel

SWNIDish kudos to Enquirer columnist Peter Bronson for his fine coverage of CCU's "Beyond the Call" Chapel, an annual event that honors the work of police and firefighters in our area. Bronson was also very kind to our friends who spoke at the event.

By the way, we affirm Bronson's affirmation of the jail tax, subject of a referendum in Hamilton County on election day, November 6.

Amazingly, six past presidents of the Cincinnati NAACP recently broke with the current leadership by endorsing the tax. That makes this referendum the most divisive issue in local politics in recent memory, splitting both the NAACP and the two Republicans on the Hamilton County Commission (boo to Pat DeWine for being an opportunistic knucklehead on this issue).

"the two Republicans on the Hamilton County Commission (boo to Pat DeWine for being an opportunistic knucklehead on this issue)."

- Actually, the County Commission is made up of two Democrats (Todd POrtune and David Pepper) and one Republican (Pat DeWine).

The only split is between the two tax and spend D's and DeWine, who had the guts to say no to more and more taxes. Haven't Republicans learned anything from our recent defeat? The Bob Taft tax and spend policies contributed to our huge failure. Kudos to Pat DeWine for standing up for what the Republican Party in this State is supposed to represent.

Point taken on the parties involved. Dumb error on our part.

Taxes are good if they're for core stuff like jails. Taxes are bad if they're for fluff stuff like midnight basketball.

DeWine is pandering to antitax groups. That's no better than what Taft did either.

The NAACP presidents split with Smitherman is expected. The old guard hates him, so I don't know how genuine they are being.

Agreed on point one.

Point two is not that simple. The antitax groups your refer to are the majority of voters in last years election. The tax was defeated, so the libs resorted to their favorite tactc of disregarding the will of the voters and increasing the tax anyway. They need to look at other options for funding the jail or making the case as to why the tax is the best way.

Until then, I will vote against the tax again this year. Ditto the CPS levy.
