"Jobs Saved!"

Last week the White House issued a statement that its economic stimulus has saved 150,000 jobs. Evil genius Karl Rove today points out that this claim comes even as total US employment dropped by 1.9 million jobs between January and May.

Gentle readers may recall the rare SWNIDish prognostication that just such an outrageous and unverifiable claim would be made by our youthful President.

Of course, all this claiming of jobs saved comes even before an appreciable amount of the stimulus has been spent. One can just as easily assume, therefore, that even more jobs would have been "saved" had the administration elected to do nothing.

I saved $10 dollars the other day by spending $28 on a round of golf.

At least you know how much you spent and can compare to other golf courses to determine actual savings. Unless, of course, you are basing your $10 savings on a comparison to a non-existent, hypothetical golf course which you theorize would have charged you the extra $10.

Either way, I'm still out $28. My point is that Obama's not the first to use the word "saved" in a misleading sense. He's simply following the well established business practice of diverting our attention away from what we're really doing by making it sound like we're doing something else. In business it's called marketing, in politics it's called spin.

but was the $28 actually a capital "investment" in the future? so really you saved $10 and spent nothing - only invested fot the future. when are you going to Q school?

I thought about going to Q school until I saved $100 million by not buying Jackson's Neverland Ranch. Now I'm just going to sit back and live off my savings.

The "stimulus" spending (apart from the non-spending tax cuts) is heavily weighted (don't know the exact percentage) toward social programs, which disincentize work. "Shovel ready" was simply shoveling... The reality is that Obama spent the vast majority on income redistribution and permanent expansion of entitlements (or raising the bar of temporary / emergency entitlements). Obama promised that jobs would be saved instead of created so that he could claim whatever savings he wanted while the economy went in the toilet.

As long as socialism is born...

"incentivize"

Hugo Chavez couldn't have planned this any better.

Aapproximaely 125,000 of O's 600,000 planned summer job increase will be for "summer youth jobs" and 135,000 will be for "department of education" (still undetermines as to what any of these folks will actually be doing effeciently). Question is how will all this be accounted for? Yes SWNID you're right - its all a shell game you can't actually track any of this.
